A girl wakes up inside a digital world and discovers she can rewind time. That one idea defines the entire game.
COGEN: Sword of Rewind and Akane is a compact but surprisingly punishing 2D action-adventure game on PC, and even after only a few stages it’s clear that it expects real execution from the player. This is not the kind of action game you casually drift through. It is hard, and it kills you often.
The basic rhythm of play is learning through failure. Wall-climbing to avoid damage becomes a common survival trick, and every new obstacle seems ready to punish even a small mistake. By the time a few stages are cleared, you will probably have already seen a whole collection of deaths: crushed, rammed, electrocuted, falling into pits, touching enemies, failing a parry, dropping into lava, and more. After enough attempts, the constant dying starts to feel oddly normal.

That is where the game’s signature mechanic comes in: the Ouroboros System, essentially a built-in time rewind ability.
You can turn time back by up to three seconds, which is just enough to escape what would otherwise be a guaranteed death and keep the fight or platforming sequence going. It is the kind of mechanic that sounds simple on paper but feels much more interesting once you actually use it in the middle of a dangerous encounter.
Still, the rewind is not something you can spam without thinking. Its use is limited, and if you rewind only to die again immediately after, that run is over and you have to start the section again. After using it, you also need to wait for those precious seconds of rewind to recover.

The game does offer hints through a robot companion after too many deaths, although those hints may not always feel especially helpful. In the end, getting through the toughest parts still comes down to practice, timing, and adapting to the game’s demands.
It’s not a big game, but it has that small, tightly designed, replayable feel that makes it easy to keep going even after repeated failures. For players who enjoy high-difficulty 2D action and like the idea of surviving by rewinding the last three seconds, this one has a clear appeal.
On Steam, it holds mostly positive reviews.
